I conduct public health research, focused on describing the structural and commercial determinants of health.
These forces, much more than healthcare, are what determine our health and wellbeing at the population level. I am a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, a Commonwealth Fund Harkness Fellow and a visiting Fellow at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
How corporate practices shape health
Health is largely shaped by the environments in which we live. These environments are often intentionally shaped by the private sector. I am interested in how these forces shape health directly and distally.
Science, discourse and health
Public discourse and understanding is an important and therefore highly contested determinant of policy, particularly when the evidence clashes with powerful interests, as in climate change. My work examines how commercial actors shape research and public discourse.
Health equity and marginalised groups
In any crisis, the health effects of these events are not born equally, but depend on how society is structured. I examine how these structures come to be and how decision-making might better account for the role of equity in generating health.
